Hubert James Taffin de Givenchy was born in France in 1927. He was raised by his grandfather, a tapestry maker. He joined Jacques Fath in 1944 and worked with him while studying at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts part-time. In 1945, joined Robert Piguet and then Lucien Lelong. In 1952 he opened his own house at 8, rue Alfred de Vigny, near the Parc Monceau. He retired from the fashion world in 1995. Today, Givenchy is one of the leading purveyors of contemporary luxury and has been a subsidiary of LVMH Moet Hennessy - Louis Vuitton Group since 1987. Its business consists of fashion, fragrances, and cosmetics.

Givenchy's fragrances are designed to convey a wide range of emotions. Ysatis perfume was launched in 1984, Amarige perfume in 1991, and Organza fragrance in 1996, each to critical acclaim. Very Irresistible Givenchy, launched in 2003 and promoted by actress Liv Tyler, combines both femininity and boldness in a unique perfume. Ange Ou Demon perfume is described by the company as 'an exceptional fragrance between dream and extreme refinement'. Givenchy's men's fragrance line began with Monsieur de Givenchy cologne, launched in 1959. Additional scents followed, with Givenchy Gentleman in 1975, Xeryus in the 1980s, and Pi Cologne in the 1990s. Blue Label cologne for men, a 'relaxed' version of Givenchy pours Homme, is a fresh, dynamic scent intended for the active man.
