Inspired by the Carrera Pan Americana, a boarder-to-boarder sports car racing event that took place yearly in Mexico from 1950 to 1954, Austrian Wilhelm Anger named his new eyewear company CARRERA after the iconic road rally when he founded his company in 1956. In 1964 after developing and patenting aptly, Anger renamed his company Aptly International and devoted it to the production of motorcycle goggles and ski masks. Renamed CARRERA International in 1974 the company expanded to include a line of sunglasses such as the iconic CARRERA Porche Design, which soon found a following among the sporting classes.

The reputation of the brand grew during the following decades through the sponsorship of various events and as the brand of choice for podium athletes. Carrera's line of products was also expanded in the late 1980s to include sports related goods, fragrances and cycling wear.
