Yohji Yamamoto

A native of Tokyo, Yohji Yamamoto was born in 1943 and studied at Keio University and Bunkafukuso Gakuin school. In 1972, he established his 'Y' ready to wear line and has since expanded into costumes, perfumes, and menswear. Although his designs are simple and almost peasant-like, they have been quite popular for its sophistication and timelessness. His various awards and recognition include the French Chevalier de l'Order des Arts et Lettres and the Fashion Group of America's 'Designer of the Year'.

Yamamoto's use of black fabrics and flat shoes, with garments which are layered, loose and flowing garments seemed anti-aesthetic to the Parisian looks of pinched silhouettes. Yohji Yamamoto was designing for Japanese women and thought of their comfort. What he did not realize was that his style provided a new approach to the body.
