Jacques Courtin founded Clarins in 1954 in France. As a medical student, he saw many reports of female patients with skin problems and decided to design a cosmetic business to take care of them. The company placed itself on the map by treating women's skin conditions with perfumed body oils made from botanical ingredients. It then expanded to creams and other products, all with the appeal of using only natural ingredients. By 1970, Clarins made its name by being the only cosmetic company to use natural materials effectively. By this time, Jacques Courtin found it suitable to legally add Clarins to his name; the brand was originally named from a character that Courtin once played in a school play. The company soon moved into the international markets and was able to set up its first subsidiary in the United States by 1981.
